Recap: AFC Toronto Defeats Calgary With 2-1 Win

AFC Toronto completed its west coast road trip with back-to-back wins following a 2-1 victory over the Calgary Wild FC on Saturday afternoon.

AFC headed into the matchup following a 3-2 win over the Vancouver Rise FC. The matchup at McMahon Stadium was the third match in eight days for Toronto. Despite the quick time frames between matches, AFC played strong and dominant against the home side Calgary.

The first half saw midfielder Nikayla Small behind the win, as she would score a first half brace that would claim the second pair of three points on the road. Small opened the scoring in the 18th minute after going through the Calgary defence and then striking a low shot through the legs of Calgary goalkeeper Jackie Burns.

Nikayla would soon double the lead and score her brace less then ten minutes after her first goal of the game through a left-footed finish into the top corner.

AFC Toronto Coach Milanovic on Nikayla Small’s performance:

“I’ve been saying it all season: Nikki is one of our best players every game,” said AFC Toronto head coach Marko Milanovic after the match. “If you see what happens off the field with her – how much she studies the game, how many hours she spends doing video, what kind of details she goes into to improve – it’s quite impressiv I can’t say enough, an absolute warrior and a phenomenal teammate off the field as well.”

The home side would find a answer to Small’s brace in the 53rd minute when Danielle Steer headed a ball past Sofia Manner cutting the lead in half, but Toronto would remain dominant and take six points back home following the two-game west coast road trip.

AFC Toronto is now undefeated in the second match of their five-game season series against Calgary Wild FC. Toronto is back home for the club’s next game and is set to face the Halifax Tides FC on Saturday, June 21 at 4:00PM EST.
