Vancouver FC Add Two New Assistant Coaches

After the departure of Niall Thompson and Arez Ardalani, Vancouver FC has added two new faces to its coaching staff in Marco Ferreira and Azad Palani.

“I am very excited to add both an international coach and a local coach to my team this season,” sys Vancouver FC head coach Afshin Ghotbi, who led the side through its inaugural season.

Anyone who has followed Ghotbi’s career will recognize the name of Marco ‘Cossa’ Ferreira. Ferreira has been an assistant coach and goalkeeper coach since 2000, and has coached alongside Ghotbi for over 200 matches. The pair have worked together across various leagues and nations, including Iran, Japan, Thailand, and China.

Most recently, Ferreira was working as a goalkeeping coach for the China’s Women’s national team during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“I am thrilled to bring Cossa [Marco Ferreira], who I have known and worked on-and-off with for more than two decades, to Vancouver,” remarked Ghotbi about his old friend.

“[He] has worked in more than eight counties across two continents for national and club teams and I’m certain that his vast international experience will be invaluable to the growth of VFC’s technical staff.”

Vancouver have also opted to bring in another local coach to pair with Ferreira’s international experience, this time with Azad Palani. Palani is the current technical director of Langley United Soccer Association (LUSA), a role he began in 2013. He will continue to maintain his role with LUSA to “foster further collaboration” between the two clubs. Prior to that, he began his coaching career in 2010 with Surrey FC, and coached Langley United Premier until recently.

“Azad has played a big role in the development of football in the local community,” explained Ghotbi about Palani’s hiring. “I am happy to add a young, talented, energetic and charismatic coach to our staff. He will play an important role in supporting me with group and individual training, and I believe he will contribute to our continual growth as a football club.”

Avid L1BC and Canadian Championship viewers might recognize Palani as being part of Will Cromack’s coaching staff for that historic TSS Rovers cup run in 2023.

Both Ferreira and Palani will join Vancouver FC as they begin their first few days of pre-season this week.
