Whitecaps Procure Poku
With Canadian attacker Kwasi Poku available following his Belgian club’s financial difficulties leading to its loss of professional status, the forward has secured his next steps through Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
The 23-year-old’s transfer is still pending receipt of his international transfer certificate. In advance of this, the Major League Soccer side has signed Poku through to the 27-28 season with a club option for a further year.
“We are excited to welcome Kwasi to our group,” says Whitecaps FC Sporting Director Axel Schuster. “Kwasi is a young, talented Canadian international who brings pace, intelligent movement, and finishing ability to our attack. He has the qualities and mindset to continue his development, and we are excited to help him take the next step in his career while strengthening our team.”

Poku first rose to prominence in the Canadian Premier League with Forge FC, who saw fit to convert him from left-back to striker. The change saw him quickly register thirteen goals and five assists before Brussels came calling.
While Forge had sold the striker to RWDM Brussels in a deal for an estimated $800,000 plus a 20% sell-on clause, it’s unclear if a transfer fee was paid in Poku’s move to the ‘Caps. As such, it’s unclear if Forge has made any gains from the sell-on clause, having been left without a large chunk of the initial figure still owed by Brussels.

Whilst in Europe, Poku aided the side with six goals from 31 appearances.
Poku has also made one appearance for the Canadian national team, and will arrive to Canada’s west coast hungry to establish himself in Major League Soccer ranks – particularly at a side that has helped produce several national team players.
Over on Vancouver Island, Pacific FC has also been on the market today, announcing the arrival of CPL familiars Shaan Hundal and Max Piepgrass.
