Fernando Lopez has left Atletico Ottawa after serving as the club’s CEO and General Manager since its inaugural campaign in 2020.

The Atletico Ottawa boss is certainly leaving on a high after helping oversee a drastic roster transformation that had many pundits labelled the team a CPL Super Club, with Fernando also having seen the team reach the CPL Final in 2022 after finishing as champions of the regular season.

“I leave knowing the club is in the best possible place,” said Lopez following the announcement. “We are top of the CPL table and unbeaten, and in the hands of a great group of talented players and coaches and an amazing front office team.”

Parent Club Atletico Madrid reassured fans that the organization remains committed to the Ottawa element of its multi-club ownership platform, which also includes Atletico San Luis in Mexico and formerly included Atletico de Kolkata.

“We deeply appreciate Fernando’s commitment during his time at the club and we wish him the greatest success in his future endeavors,” said Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel-Angel Gil Martin, who added that the foundation created by Fernando is one theyll be building upon.

Lopez – who also served on the Canadian Premier League’s Board of Governors – has been with Atletico Madrid since 2016 as its Head of International Football Development.

Recent rumours suggest he may be set for Real Zaragoza.

While Atletico Ottawa is back to performing on the pitch after a rough 2023, the club has also earned plaudits for how it performs off it: last season saw Ottleti average just about 5,000 fans per match, with the club’s sole CPL final appearance procuring an attendance of 14,992 fans. They’ve also worked hard at community-building, and earned no less than five CPL Business Awards last year under Fernando’s leadership.

“Atletico Ottawa wants to thank Fernando for his time during these five seasons with the club. His leadership and strategic vision have been fundamental to establishing today a successful organization,” added ATO President Jeff Hunt. “We sincerely thank Fernando for his dedication and professionalism, and we want to state that he is leaving an immense footprint in all our hearts. Atleti and Ottawa will always be your home.”

The club’s business operations will be helmed by Jon Sinden, who runs a marketing agency which played a key role in the club’s success in business metrics thus far, in collaboration with the Atletico Madrid supporting structure. Football operations will be led by assistant coach JD Ulanowski and, of head coach Carlos Gonzalez, who remains on contract through 2024.

“I am honoured to have played a small part in the history of Atleico Ottawa,” concluded Lopez online. “I will be forever grateful for the support and love I have received over all these years from all our players, coaches, staff and fans. […] I will miss you all and I will hold many massive memories that I will cherish forever. A piece of me will always remain in Ottawa, and trust from this day, I will be your biggest supporter.”

Atletico Ottawa currently rests five points clear at the top of the table and is undefeated eight games in. That’s a streak they’ll expect to keep running as they head to Winnipeg to face Valour on Sunday.
