Watch: Baskett Boots Ball Away During Penalty Shootout
Former Halifax Wanderers and Pacific goalkeeper Kieran Baskett has made waves in Norway after the goalkeeper delayed a penalty kick by, quite literally, just running up and booting the ball away before the referee blew his whistle for the spot kick.
What a strategy, eh?
The Canadian, on loan in Norway’s second tier with Brattvag IF, received an immediate yellow for unsporting behavior, though his unorthodox mind games didn’t pan out as Moss FK did ultimately convert the penalty to win the relegation playoff match. Baskett received a second yellow after the loss, so his antics ultimately resulted in both the ball and the player himself getting a firm boot.
Canadian Premier League fans with good memories will realize this strategy was once deployed by none other than Niko Giantsopoulos, who booted the ball during a penalty kick in Tasmania and received a slice of cheese for his unsporting behavior.
“Often imitated, never duplicated,” said Niko about Baskett’s similar strategy of booting the ball out mid-penalty.
Giantsopoulos, as it were, saved his respective penalty effort.
This November also saw Canadian U-17 goalkeeper Jonathan Ransom receive a yellow for doing chin-ups mid-penalty shootout against Ireland and, throughout its entirety, being an absolute thorn in the opposition’s side with some particular choice words for Grady McDonnell, who has swapped allegiances between the two youth teams.
In short, it’s been one hell of a month for Canadian keepers in shootouts.
Baskett, 24, had started the year with Challenger Pro side Lierse, but found himself loaned out to Norwegian second division side SK Traeff before being loaned out to former side Brattvag midseason. He made twenty appearances between the two, picking up yellows in just about a quarter of those games.

The Halifax, Novia Scotia-born goalkeeper turned professional with hometown side Halifax Wanderers back in 2021, wrestling a start spot away from Christian Oxner and making 21 appearances for the Wanderers over two seasons.
After the CPL side opted not to activate his club option for 2023, he weaved his way out to Canada’s west coast with Pacific FC, tallying eleven appearances in a season where Emil Gazdov claimed the majority of starts.
He then spent a season with Brattvag IL before joining Lierse this January, going on two loan spells this year and – as we see above – having quite an unceremonious finish to his season.
