Cavalry Adds NYRB Defender Curtis Ofori

Cavalry FC has in the midst of plenty of roster movement ahead of the 2026 Canadian Premier League season.

The Calgary, Alberta-based side is bringing in New York Red Bulls left-back Curtis Ofori on a two-year deal which includes a club option for 2028. Ofori had been a free agent since November, when his MLS option year for ’26 was declined.

The New York-born defender had been a one-club man with the New York Red Bulls until now. He was a member of the MLS side’s U-13 academy, progressing all the way through to a pro deal with USL Championship-era New York Red Bulls II and converting that into a homegrown player contract with the first team just one year later.

While Ofori never made his first team debut, he was a regular feature with the New York Red Bulls II and made 82 appearances for them in a fairly even split of their USL Championship and MLS Next Pro eras. His NYRB2 side won the 2025 MLS Next Pro Cup, with Ofori featuring in every playoff match en route to the trophy win.

“Curtis is a dynamic, powerful fullback who thrives in one-on-one duels and contributes brilliantly going forward.” says Cavalr FC head coach and general manager Tommy Wheeldon Jr, who describes the new recruit as someone with all the tools one looks for in the modern game – and with plenty of growth ahead of him, too.

Last season saw the club deploy Bradley Kamdem Fewo, Mihail Gherasimencov, and Tom Field to the left-back spot. With Gherasimencov earning a first-team deal with the Whitecaps and Tom Field now with Vancouver FC, that leaves Kamdem Fewo to fight for minutes against newcomer Ofori.

It’s worth noting that Ofori, 20, has also built up some minutes on the opposite right flank and as a centre-back, giving Tommy Wheeldon Jr. some valuable versatility in a salary cap league like Canada’s top flight.

“It means a lot to join a club with such great history and legacy,” says Ofori. “I’m very excited to play in front of the loyal and prideful fans that Cavalry has, and to help play a part in continuing the winning ways of the club.”

Ofori also has Ghanaian heritage and has represented Ghana up to the U-20 level.

Cavalry is rolling out with several signing announcements of late, adding Toronto FC forward Nathaniel Edwards and former Forge midfielder Harry Paton last week.

Ofori’s earliest debut could come as soon as Sunday, April 5, with Cavalry kicking off the ’26 campaign away to Pacific.
