Cavalry Captain Camargo Signs Big Contract Extension
Cavalry FC has handed a multi-year contract extension to club original and team captain Sergio Camargo.
The 31-year-old midfielder has been a mainstay under Tommy Wheeldon Jr since the club launched in 2019, donning the captain’s armband following the departure of Marco Carducci to the Halifax Wanderers this year.
The Colombia-born, Toronto-raised midfielder has amassed some 171 appearances for Cavalry, racking up 34 goals and 22 assists along the way to become its all-time top goalscorer, though he’ll need 22 more appearances to become its appearance leader.
His new contract will run through to the 2028 CPL season, which would be his tenth with the team.

“From the very first day, this club has set the standard for excellence in the CPL, showing everyone what Canadian soccer can truly be,” said Sergio Camargo following his extension. “Being here since day one, I’ve felt the incredible passion this club and city has for soccer every single time I step onto the pitch. We’ve grown this league together, and there is nowhere else I’d rather be. I’m honoured to wear the armband, and to bring more trophies home to Calgary.”
Camargo had said years ago that Cavalry would be the only CPL club he would ever play for in his career.
The attacking midfielder was named as one of Cavalry’s first-ever signings alongside now-assistant coach Nik Ledgerwood, having spent the previous season establishing himself under Tommy with the Calgary Foothills before Canada’s own professional league launched a season later.
His dynamic performances in the middle of the park quickly established Camargo as an effective attacker in the league, with Cavalry becoming a perennial title challenger in the league. Despite several trips to the finals, it would take until 2024 for Cavalry to go all the way, with Camargo scoring en-route to the club’s first title win.
Head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr describes the club talisman as the heartbeat for his squad.
“As a player from day one, he has lived every chapter of our journey and embodies the culture of Cavalry,” says the gaffer. “He understands the young players because he was once in their shoes, and now serves as the experienced voice we lean on in key moments. While his goals and assists speak for themselves, his true value lies in his leadership, character, and unwavering commitment to the badge.”
Camargo’s own professional career began through a homegrown player contract with Toronto FC in 2017, with the midfielder spending a season in the USL with Toronto FC II before progressing westwards. Camargo has helped his side upend MLS squads in the Canadian Championship before, with the team facing a tough test against the Vancouver Whitecaps in the tournament next month.
With Camargo’s new contract extension keeping the veteran midfielder in place through to 2028, an integral building block of the squad roster is one less thing for Tommy Wheeldon Jr. to worry about as his side fights to retake top spot in league standings.
The financial terms of Camargo’s Cavalry contract were not disclosed by the club.
