Cavalry Absentee Myer Bevan Wins National Title With Auckland

Cavalry star Myer Bevan may not have been with his CPL side as they secured a North Star Cup this year, but this weekend saw him hoist a national league title back in his home country.

The 27-year-old featured in Auckland City FC’s Grand Final against Birkenhead United, where his interlinking play inadvertently forced an own-goal equalizer from the competition. The match went to extra time, where Bevan’s side won the day with a goal in the 110th minute landing the side its tenth-ever national league title.

The striker had scored an incredible 151 second hat trick in the match preceding this weekend’s grand final. He finishes his Navy Blue season with eight goals in nine appearances across all competitions, having marked his initial return with a goal against Al-Ain in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

The Cavalry star last featured for his Canadian Premier League side in February, scoring in continental action against Orlando City before informing the club he would not return for preseason camp or the season afterwards.

180 days of radio silence later, Bevan quietly resurfaced with hometown side Auckland City FC, prompting Cavalry – two weeks later – to state it had granted him permission to play amateur football in New Zealand, where he’s been living with his partner and two young children.

With Cavalry having said little following his departure, it remains doubtful if a return to the CPL could still unfold, particularly after Myer crumpled up his club contract for the past season. The club had placed him on the inactive roster list before finally cracking its first ever playoff championship without him.

The Auckland-born attacker had tallied 19 goals in 46 appearances for Cavalry, producing a golden boot-winning campaign in 2023 that helped the club to a regular season championship.

What comes next for Myer, who can undoubtedly produce at the professional level, remains to be seen.

I wonder if he got ever got a medal for the North Star Cup, if he was still technically on the Cavalry roster?
