Choiniere Touches On ‘Interesting’ FC Supra Project

When the Canadian Premier League’s long-awaited expansion into Quebec was confirmed last month, FC Supra turned heads with its bold mission statement: fielding a team entirely comprised of Quebecois talent.

With such an interesting project on offer, the roster speculation surrounding the club been quick to mount. We took a swing on fifteen Quebecois players who would be a good fit for FC Supra, and named among them was Forge stalwart David Choiniere.

The 28-year-old is a four-time CPL champion and a club original with Forge FC, with Choiniere suiting up for the hammers nearly two hundred times since 2019. He’s tallied thirty goals and nearly just as many assists over the years, firmly establishing himself as a reliable big game player within CPL circles.

With his Forge contract expiring this year, the forward was recently asked about the FC Supra project by Quentin Parisis, revealing a genuine curiosity about the club that is sure to turn heads as the CPL veteran nears free agency.

“It was time for there to be a team in Quebec,” he says, first and foremost. “I’m especially happy for the province, for the people, for the young players in Quebec who haven’t had the opportunity to play at the professional level. Now that opportunity is right here. It helps the whole province, and I think the project Supra wants to launch is a great one. He wants to bring the community together; it’s made for the people of Quebec. The intention is really good.”

“Supra will have a clear identity, which will create a unifying effect for the team. You’re playing for the community, and the fans will be behind the team. It will automatically connect. That’s why I say the project is very interesting.”

While Choiniere believes sourcing the roster from the local tap can be a good strength, he also acknowledges that the level of play seen within the CPL has been on a steady rise, and that such a project must be managed carefully.

“By only having Quebec players, you’re definitely limiting yourself in terms of player selection. Time will tell if it works. There may be difficulties. That said, there is a lot of talent in Quebec. If you can bring together the right players and create a strong identity, with an interesting game plan, I believe that with the talent that’s out there, it can take off very quickly.”

Perhaps most interestingly, the Forge original feels this year has been frustrating for him: while he feels fit and backs his talent, his appearances this season haven’t come in full ninety minutes increments. In fact, Choiniere has either entered the game as substitute or found himself taken off early in eighteen of his twenty league appearances this season, resulting in a total minutes played tally of less than half of what he had last year.

“It’s been a frustrating season for me personally because I feel fit, I think I’m playing well, but I’m not getting much playing time,” admits Choiniere. “It’s a little frustrating, but I’m here to help the team, I have good intentions. I’d like to contribute a little more and play a little more, but ultimately, it’s the coach’s decision.”

When asked directly by Parisis if he might be suiting up for FC Supra next year, Choiniere still played it safe:

“I can’t answer that right now. Let’s talk about it later.”
