Wanderers Add Pierre On Loan In Bid For Playoff Push
It’s fair to say that Vanni Sartini‘s first season at the Halifax Wanderers head coach has had its share of challenges: locked in fifth place in a league that changed its playoff format to feature just four teams, the Haligonians are walking a proverbial tightrope.
To aid in his push northwards up the table, Sartini has made the best of his Vancouver Whitecaps connections to bring in American-Haitian striker Nelson Pierre on loan for the remainder of the season.
This will be Pierre’s second loan of the year, having spent a quiet few months with FC Tulsa in the USL Championship. The attacker had one goal in twelve appearances, and will now reset north of the border.
Sartini had expressed some frustration with the club’s lack of goal conversions, with the MLS prospect entering as the second ‘Caps attacker to arrive on loan after Cyprian Kachwele, who has been limited to just two goal contributions thus far.
Pierre did produce a strong twelve-goal haul for the Whitecaps FC 2 last season, where he also earned his first taste of first team opportunities and even bagged a goal against Orlando City in Major League Soccer.
More of that, please, ask the Wanderers of him.
“Nelson is a goal scorer, and I really like how he attacks the space to create scoring opportunities for himself and be lethal behind the opposition lines,” says Sartini on the club’s new recruit.
“His proven ability to finish scoring chances complements our team style of play that creates lots of opportunities to score. He has a great combination of size, quickness and composure in front of the goal.”
Pierre is a Haiti U-20 international and had previously developed stateside through the Philadelphia Union before his move up to the ‘Caps. His time in Philly saw him build experience on loan to Skovde AIK and Charlotte Independence, too.
Fans could see the club’s new striker as soon as this Sunday, with Pierre available for selection in a coast-to-coast clash against a Pacific FC still seeking its first win of the season.
It’s a big day for Haitians with the surname of Pierre, with Forge FC signing national team midfielder Olivier Woodensky Pierre.
The Wanderers have also confirmed that former Crystal Palace prospect Victor Akinwale has been placed on the season-ending injury list. Given that injuries were part of his storyline in England, it’s a tough go for the youngster, who remains on club options for 2027 and 2028.
Akinwale had made made ten appearances throughout all competitions and registered his sole assist against Inter Toronto.
