Inter Toronto 1-2 Supra: Visitors Claim Huge Win

Supra du Quebec maintained their unbeaten record against Inter Toronto on Wednesday, and it could very well have decided both teams’ seasons.

The Canadian Premier League‘s third expansion club prevailed 2-1 on the road against the Nine Stripes in front of a sold-out York Lions Stadium.

Inter Toronto, completing a three-game stretch at home, was victorious 3-1 against Cavalry in their most recent contest. Coach Mauro Eustaquio opted for two adjustments to his lineup for the crucial midweek match.

As for Supra, they started life under new coach Kyt Selaidopoulos with a dominant 5-0 success over Pacific last weekend. They also had just two changes for Wednesday’s match.

The contest saw students from schools in the York region attend, and it did not take very long for them to celebrate a home goal. Just seven minutes in, an Ollie Bassett free kick found Tomasz Skublak. Despite his initial header being blocked, the ball fell straight back to the striker, who blasted his volley into the roof of the goal.

Toronto, who has not kept a clean sheet since mid-May, saw their lead last nine and a half minutes. That is because Diyaeddine Abzi played in a perfect cross to find Loic Kweimi, who rose highest to beat Antonio Campos and tie the game.

The Supra number nine, who went down after scoring the equalizer, stayed in the match and continued to look dangerous. Midway through the half, he carved out a shooting chance that was stopped by Campos.

Inter could count themselves lucky not to have conceded from an Omar El Kalkouli strike from distance. Having given away the ball, the visitors went on the attack, with the winger’s effort coming back off the post. Campos’ fingertips were the difference between the game still being level and Supra going in front.

With less than 10 minutes left in the opening half, the Quebec-based side struck again. Once more, a poor giveaway from Inter opened the door for their opponents. This time, they were punished. Kwemi beat his marker before finding the bottom corner with his shot from an increasingly tight angle.

The second half saw Inter come out in search for a leveller. Kembo Kibato nearly produced that for his side, but his shot was deflected wide. It had Joakhim Milli concerned though.

Supra could have made it 3-0 as Kwemi slipped an opponent before driving down the byline. His pass did find El Kalkouli, but the shot did not have enough power, allowing for Raul Lopez to get back and clear his lines.

Despite being ahead, Supra did not fear going to attack and add to their advantage. Sean Rea had a go during a counter, but it was straight at Campos. Moments later, his corner found Aboubacar Sissoko’s head, but the captain could only nod it wide of the mark.

Towards the end, Sawfane Mlah came on for the guests and could have added to the lead. With less than 20 minutes left, he had two shots on target, both of which required a stop from Campos to keep the score 2-1.

Toronto’s best chance came in the 73rd minute, when a cross from Bassett found the foot of Ariel Almagro. The winger could only put his effort over the bar though, letting Supra off with a warning.

In the end, Supra held on for a massive three points. The result solidified their fifth spot, moving them two points back of Vancouver FC for the final playoff spot. That will be the next matchup for the side in what could very well decide fourth spot in the league. The two will meet on Saturday in Laval.

For Inter, their hopes of ending the season in fourth spot are all but over. Sitting six points adrift of the Eagles, who also have three more wins than them, things are looking quite grim. Next for them will be a 905 Derby against Forge in which should they lose, their elimination will be confirmed. That would also be the face for the Nine Stripes should Vancouver defeat Supra.
