York United Academy Adds Michael Williams

The second signing for the York United Academy – the CPL club’s U-20 squad set to feature in the League1 Ontario Championship – has just been unveiled.

The Nine Stripes are bringing in 18-year-old goalkeeper Michael Williams, who had once nearly made his Canadian Premier League debut at the shockingly young age of fifteen, having once even been a ball boy for the club.

The last three seasons have seen the Kingston-born shotstopper ride the bench seven times in all for the York United first team, collecting one yellow card in the process.

Now a strapping six-foot-tall eighteen-year old youth prospect, he’s committed to both Utah Tech University and the York United Academy, having already tallied two years of hefty League1 Ontario experience in his resume.

Williams has plied his trade in League1 Ontario before the York United Academy purchase the vacant license left by Toronto FC in Canada’s semi-pro ranks.

Last year saw him represent Vaughan’s League2 side in addition to its U-20 setup, making fourteen appearances overall, including a playoff match with the U-20 reserves.

He was with North Mississauga FC for the 2023 League1 Ontario season, with Williams make fifteen appearances between the sticks.

The York United Academy had just announced its first signing in Joshua Lopez this week, who – similarly to Williams – had previously been with the first team on a developmental contract
