DC United Draws Level Late Against Nine-Man Toronto FC

The Reds had headed to Audi Field in hopes of finishing on a positive note before the two-week international break.

It was looking all well and clear for the Reds after the first 45 minutes: TFC came in blazing with recent signing Derrick Etienne Jr. scoring his first goal as a Red in just the second minute of the game after Federico Bernardeshci ball would find him at the edge of the box.

After assisting the first goal, Bernardeschi would find himself doubling the lead for Toronto FC in the 33rd minute after striking it into the far post with his left foot burying his seventh goal of this MLS campaign.

DC United would find themselves getting one back in the 79th minute after a strike from outside the box from Jared Stroud would be deflected by keeper Sean Johnson, but some quick feet from Theodore Ku-DiPietro would get the rebound and knock it in for the hosts.

Federico Bernardeschi would find himself sent off in the 87th minute after receiving a second yellow card. Soon after, the Reds would be down to nine men as Nicksoen Gomis would be sent off with a similar second yellow for a foul tackle on Garrison Tubbs in the penalty box.

With VAR examining the tackle, it was determined that a penalty kick should be awarded as a result on Nicksoen’s challenge. In the 95th minute of added time, that spot kick saw Mateusz Klich net it past Sean Johnson for a last-gasp equalizer over nine-man TFC.

Coach Herdman and the Reds will have two-week break with some players away on national duty for the international break to regroup as they will come back to a couple of games to play for the month of June.
