Tonight saw Toronto FC’s Canadian Championship quarter-final stage kick off in Quebec at the Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard, with the Reds going up against 2023 Ligue1 Quebec champions CS Saint-Laurent.

The MLS visitors defeated Saint Laurent 3-0 with a strong dominant second half showing from the eight-time winners.

The first half ended scoreless with both sides putting solid efforts to break the deadlock, yet nothing found the back of the net for either.

It was not until the 50th minute of the second half that Matty Longstaff would open the scoring for TFC, just one match after scoring his first goal as a Red in the weekend’s MLS action against FC Dallas. Longstaff would add his second goal as a TFC player after slotting it into the top right corner in a superb strike.

Deandre Kerr would extend the lead just nine minutes after Longstaff’s opening goal, firing it home a Deybi Flores long ball would find Kerr on the counter attack.

The man of hour Federico Bernardeschi – who scored two goals against FC Dallas – came on as a substitute and sealed the night for Toronto FC by scoring a brilliant goal off the free kick a few feet away from the corner flag.

The second leg is set to take place at BMO Field on Tuesday, May 21 with kickoff set at 7:00PM EST, with TFC securing itself a comfortable goal differential beforehand – though it was ultimately a strong showing from their semi-professional opposition, which Herdman acknowledged in the post-game presser.

Yet before the Reds and Coach Herdman can look to finish business in the quarter-finals of the Canadian Championship, the Reds will first have to return to some MLS action as they are set to take on New York City FC at home on Saturday as they sit on a five game winning streak across all competitions.
