After a recent stint of wins across all competitions, the Reds fell short as they welcomed New York City for their second meeting this 2024 MLS season.

The two clubs’ first matchup ended with New York City taking the 2-1 one at home on March 16th. Tonight’s 3-2 loss gives New York City the series sweep.

It was visitors New York City that would open the scoring after a penalty was called, with Santiago Rodriguez making no mistake 12 yards out as he would give his side the 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute of the first half.

The visitors would extend their lead a few minutes before the first time was blown and the goal would come from Malachi Jones, who tallied his first MLS goal with a well-placed right-footed shot.

The home side would get their first goal ten minutes into the second half as Federico Bernardeschi would continue his goal scoring streak, firing into the top of the net after a scramble in front of it.

The visitors would then restore their two-goal lead in the 77th minute after a beautiful team play in the box would find the feet of Andres Perea, sealing the sweep for New York City.

Defender Raoul Petretta, who was subbed in the 67th, would score a late on in the 89th minute giving Toronto one and scoring his first goal as a Red. The goal merely wasn’t enough to get the job done at home, but nonetheless it was spectacular finish from the Italian defender.

Tonight’s loss to New York City marks the Reds’ fifth loss this 2024 MLS campaign, and it ended with a fight breaking out between the two sides. Bernardeschi picked up a red from the referee in the ensuing fallout, and it remains unclear all that unfolded in the buildup to it with Sean Johnson heavily involved.

Yet, Coach Herdman and his squad will have to quickly regroup and not dwell on the tough loss but instead have to focus as they are to head to Nashville for some mid-week MLS action on Wednesday.
