In what was the Reds’ third home game of the 2024 MLS campaign, it was a tough night for the home crowd as TFC fell to a 1-3 defeat.

The Reds hosted Sporting Kansas City, one of the ten charter members of MLS. Toronto FC headed into the matchup after defeating Atlanta United 2-0 and Sporting KC was coming off a 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The first half started well for Toronto, as Goalkeeper Luka Gavran kept them in the game for the first 45 denying the guests from scoring.

Yet, Sporting Kansas would break the deadlock in the second half and score three goals by Remi Walter, Jake Davis, and Alenis Vargas to seal the three points.

Captain Jonathan Osorio would help Toronto FC avoid a shutout as he would score his first goal as captain (and his first of the season), after converting a pass from Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty in the seventh minute of stoppage time.

The Reds currently sit fifth in the Eastern Conference with ten points. Coach Herdman will continue to be tested as the injury crisis continues, as recent news on Italian star Lorenzo Insigne is that his injury will leave him sidelined for six weeks. As Herdman mentioned in last weeks win against Atlanta, ‘it has been the next man up’. This seems to be the case that will spill into the following games as Toronto’s next two games will be on the road.

Coach Herdman will have to find some power to get back into form from someone other then Insigne, perhaps from fellow Italian DP Federico Bernardeschi, who put up a impressive shift in last week’s matchup which landed him and Tyrese Spicer the notch of team of the matchday honours. The 1-3 home loss also marked Bernardeschi’s 50th regular-season appearance for Toronto.

Toronto FC will travel to Vancouver for next weekend’s matchup. The whitecaps currently sit second in the western conference. After that, on April 13th the Reds will head to Charlotte FC for second game on the road.
