Club Atletico Morelia Sign Josue Martinez
By Following his loan spell with York United, midfielder Josue Martinez had been announced as a new arrival in Mexico’s second division.
He’ll now don the red-and-yellow stripes of Club Atletico Morelia on a permanent move from Liga MX giant CF Monterrey.
The 22-year-old arrived to York Lions Stadium on loan from CF Monterrey this spring, making 29 appearances and tallying two goals for the Nine Stripes. Featuring in all but two possible games, he was a near-constant presence under the tenure of both Martin Nash and his successor Benjamin Mora.
Josue’s new second division side found themselves in the bottom half of Apertura action this year, but are hopeful to claw up a few notches come Clausura time. Given that they finished as runner-up in the 2023 Clausura and had put forth a good Apertura effort this year, it’ll feel like an achievable directive under new head coach Nacho Castro.
Martinez has plied his trade in Mexico’s second flight before, having spent a season with now-defunct Expansion MC side Raya2 Expansion. He made fifty appearances in Mexico’s second tier overall.
Earlier on, the midfielder also won the Concacaf U-17 Boys Championship with Mexico, featuring in all seven of their tournament matches before making three appearances at the U-18 level.
The Nine Stripes have made a formal partnership with Josue’s former parent club CF Monterrey, who loaned Orlando Botello to the Nine Stripes and left-back Daniel Parra to Forge this year. That relationship is expected to result in future loans for YUFC, perhaps moreso than loans to their rival club.
Josue’s old boss from York United, Benjamin Mora, just completed a return to Mexico and will coach Liga MX side Queretaro.
York United is shifting the majority of its roster as it heads in to the 2025 CPL season, though Martinez – as a loanee – was not expected to return regardless. The club is heading towards the end of the calendar year with just five players locked in for next season, with the majority on club options or expiring deals.
