Former CPL Prospect Mamadou Ba Lands In Germany
Football fans in Canada’s capital might remember Mamadou Ba, the local teenage talent who signed a development deal with Atletico Ottawa during an injury crisis four years ago.
The spotlight put on Ba back then eventually paved way for an opportunity with the CF Montreal Academy, with the youngster later featuring for the Halifax Wanderers U-23 team. Last season saw him resurface back in Ontario with the Thunder Bay Chill, though with the USL side now sitting out for 2025, the 21-year-old midfielder will now test himself abroad over in Germany.
Following a trial spell in the Koln U-23 ranks, the Futuro Academy graduate has signed on with German Mittelrheinliga side FC Pesch, who are based in Koln. Playing at the regionalized state level in Germany, Ba will ultimately test himself in what would equate to Germany’s fifth tier.

The Canadian-Senegalese youngster will have a golden opportunity to test himself in a box-to-box midfield role, though only time will tell if Mamadou Ba’s development abroad could eventually see him return to the Canadian Premier League – where he never ultimately got a first team contract between his stints with Atletico Ottawa and the Halifax Wanderers.
We’ve seen young domestic talent develop well in Germany’s lower tiers, with recent Valour recruit Eryk Pop having spent a spell with Karlsruher SC before securing his pro deal in Canada.
The German lower tiers operate on quite a high level, with golden boot winner Tobias Warschewski trialing with a third division side between FC Edmonton and Cavalry FC spells.
