Akron For Agunbiade: Wanderers Youngster Heading For NCAA

By on July 29, 2024 0 2001 Views

The Halifax Wanderers have confirmed that Vaughan Azzurri prospect Remi Agunbiade has wrapped up his time out east on a developmental contract.

The 18-year-old had made his professional debut in a home match against Atletico Ottawa this spring, garnering six minutes off the bench in a 1-3 defeat.

The teenage talent trained regularly with the Wanderers first team while also featuring for the Wanderers Development Team. He’s now embarking on his first season in the NCAA with soccer powerhouse University of Akron, who have helped produce talents like Richie Laryea and former CPL midfielder Adam Najem.

Last year saw the youngster make his League1 Ontario debut for Patrice Gheisar’s former side Vaughan Azzurri, with Agunbiade having also tallied 14 goals for their U-19 setup.

The Vaughan Azzurri have produced a number of players who have excelled at the professional level, with several Wanderers having once called the semi-pro club home.

Now entering the back-half of their season, the Halifax Wanderers need to hand significant youth minutes to other domestic U-21 players if they’re to hit the league’s required 2,000 minute marker by season’s end. They’ve tallied just 375 so far, most of which have come from Tiago Coimbra.

That’s the least out of any team in the league, which comes as a surprise given Patrice’s strong background for developing local talent.

Follow development contract signing Yorgos Gavas has yet to earn any minutes with the side, who are struggling at the bottom of the league table after making playoffs last year.
