Lisbon Loanee: Cavalry Adds Midfielder Lucas Dias
The reigning Canadian Premier League regular season champions have added yet another midfielder of high stature, taking in Sporting Lisbon attacking midfielder Lucas Dias on a season-long loan.
The 21-year-old was born in Toronto and has featured for Canada at the U-23 level after testing himself in Portugal’s youth ranks, accruing interest from Scottish side Hearts last year.
Dias first arrived to Sporting Lisbon after turning heads in their Toronto-based affiliate academy, rising through the youth ranks in Lisbon to crack not only their U-19 and U-23 teams, but the reserves as well – for whom he made three appearances.
All-told, he’s tallied six goals and five assist through 59 appearances for the reserve and youth ranks, making him an interesting loanee for Cavalry to bring in, and one who will be keen for minutes at the senior level.
“Lucas is an exciting talent that has had a great upbringing in one of Europe’s top clubs,” says head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. “He is a clever, attack-minded player that wants to make things happen in the opponent’s half. We look forward to him wearing our crest and providing another attacking piece to our squad.”
The Calgary, Alberta-based club has retained essentially all of the core roster who landed them a league trophy last year, with Lucas likely to be added to their continental selections when Orlando City comes up north in a few weeks.
Lucas Dias is set for a full season loan with Cavalry, with their Starlight Stadium-hosted match against Orlando offering a potential debut on February 21.
