Toronto FC II winger Reshaun Walkes is currently training with Canadian Premier League side York United, with the forward present as the club opened up its preseason on Monday.

The 24-year-old right winger would be a surprise release from Toronto FC’s MLS NEXT Pro side, with the SuperDraft pick having contributed six goals and two assists last season before going out of contract at the season’s end.

If he does complete a move to York United, he’d do so with 42 MLS NEXT Pro appearances and twelve goals in the bank following his selection by Toronto FC in the MLS SuperDraft two years ago, having tallied a goal or assist contribution rate of one per 96 minutes with TFC2.

Head coach Martin Nash told fans at a recent meet-and-greet that he was seeking a winger, and with Kevin Dos Santos set for an intra-league move elsewhere we’d surmise the right wing is the spot to fill. That’s where Walkes runs the pitch, though he’s played out left a few times, too.

The six-foot-one forward was prolific at the NCAA level before turning pro, scoring 14 goals in 25 appearances for the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley after bagging an immense 29 goals in 30 appearances at the NJCAA level with Lewis & Clarke Community College when he played directly as a striker.

The Brampton baller had also featured at the USL2 level, helping the Des Moines Menace to a playoff push and assisting himself with a unique chip-to-header goal along the way. He’d also cut his teeth in League1 Ontario, tallying six goals in 17 appearances for Master’s FA and helping them hoist a league back in 2019.

It looks like Walkes isn’t the only Toronto FC II player trialing with the Nine Stripes, with defender Matthew Medeiros also vying for a roster spot. York United will have a new-look defense this season, with centre-backs Oswaldo Leon and Frank Sturing arriving while youngster Noah Abatneh fighting for minutes alongside a potential new arrival in Medeiros.

While York United’s full preseason plans aren’t known, the team has over one month to prepare for the club’s sixth season. They’ll open the campaign on the road against Atletico Ottawa on April 13.
