With Toronto FC hitting a ten-game winless streak and losing out to Canadian Premier League side Forge last night, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment has now parted ways with TFC and Argonauts President Bill Manning, effective immediately.

“On behalf of MLSE’s Board of Directors and the entire organization, we want to thank Bill for his many contributions in his nearly nine years with the company,” read a statement from MLSE President and CEO Keith Pelley.

“Bill will always be an important part of the championship history for both clubs, but as we evaluate the path ahead, and measure against our ambition to consistently deliver contending teams, it was determined that a new direction was required. Bill is a very accomplished team executive, and a good man, and we wish him and his family the very best in the future.”

Manning took over as Toronto FC President back in 2015, enjoying a highlight period as the club recorded the first domestic treble in MLS history two years later. Things have regressed significantly since, however, with the club going through four head coaches since Vanney’s departure at the end of 2020, with Tim Bezbatchenko’s departure as GM in 2019 still being felt.

Toronto FC’s current era sees the club paying for oke of the highest payrolls in the league, but the results haven’t followed. After a dismal period under Bob Bradley came to an end last year, the team brought in Canadian national team boss John Herdman. After a strong run of form, things have gone firmly off the rails with the team recording six straight losses and going winless in its last ten games.

Manning had picked up double duty as the Argonauts President in 2018, and has been relieved of both positions despite signing a five-year extension back in 2021. As part of this transition, Toronto FC General Manager Jason Hernandez will report directly to MLSE President Keith Pelley.

Prior to his time with Toronto FC, Manning had long-served as Real Salt Lake’s President and had earned two MLS Executive of the Year awards. His arrival marked a big restructuring to TFC’s internal operations.

Toronto FC sits in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, over twenty points back of the pole position with a goal difference of -13. Fifteenth-place DC United are four points behind them.

The decision for Manning to depart was described as a mutual agreement between the club and its now ex-President.

Manning isn’t the only MLS official to have lost his post following a Canadian Championship loss to CPL opposition, with former Vancouver Whitecaps head coach Marc Dos Santos being sacked after a knockout loss to Pacific back in 2021.

The Reds will return to action this Saturday at home to the Philadelphia Union.
