Preview: Toronto FC vs NY Red Bulls – Herdman Tasks Team To Not Concede Late Goals

Toronto FC, who are 7-9-3 and winless in its last five matches and have only one win secured in the last eight league fixtures, now heads to New York to take on the Red Bulls who are 8-4-7.

With the most recent loss being the home loss at BMO Field where the Reds had a 1-0 lead but then let visiting side Nashville SC score two to take the three points.

With three of the losses out of five games have come in the 90th minute or later, the Reds will be tasked with stopping to concede goals in the final minutes.

Head coach John Herdman commented on the recent dips in performance during the final minutes of games.

“We have a real problem with these last 30 minutes of games and unless we fix that we’re going to find ourselves in a tough spot,” he says. “All our attention, all our focus is going to be on finishing strong.”

He will have to do so with a number of absences: Federico Bernardeschi remains questionable as he is fighting a illness. If he’s unavailable tonight, it will serve Toronto a significant loss as he has been a key play maker this season for the Reds. Sean Johnson, Jonathan Osorio, and Richie Laryea remain on international duty, while Shane O’Neill, Brandon Servania, and Tyrese Spicer are all out due to injury.

Home side New York Red Bulls are also facing a couple of absences with five confirmed Carlos Coronel, Roald Mitchell, Lewis Morgan, Serge Ngoma, and Peter Stroud. Questionable are Kyle Duncan and Emil Forsberg.

With what was an impressive run in the beginning of the season for Toronto FC, the spark has seemed to died down. Coach Herdman will need to turn things around soon before the club finds itself in a tough position as they currently sit seventh in the Eastern conference and it all begins today against a very tough opponent who has proved this season to be a hard to beat team at home.

Catch the action tonight with kickoff at 7:30PM EST.
