Atletico Ottawa Signs Star CPL Defender Amer Didic

It’s been one of the most captivating offseasons to watch in the Canadian Premier League, and it’s only getting better: Atletico Ottawa has just confirmed the signing of star CPL defender Amer Didic, who was unveiled tonight at a season ticket holder event in the nation’s capital.

While the terms of his contract won’t likely be unveiled until his formal announcement tomorrow, today saw Manuel Veth report that the big defender had signed a one-year deal with a club option for 2025.

The highly-touted defender was spotted training with the capital city club in Mexico after his initial move to Norwegian side Odds BK fell through, with Atletico Ottawa now ultimately landing the coveted free agent after he received multiple offers league-wide. Should a reasonable offer come in from Norway later on, it is expected the defender will be allowed to move – but for now, this represents a huge coup for the CPL side.

The six-foot-three centre-back tallied 63 appearances for Pacific over the last two seasons, earning a defender of the year nomination during his debut Tridents campaign. He made waves when he left Pacific at the end of the 2023 CPL season, which is when Atletico Ottawa had first tabled an offer to the defender.

He now joins another star CPL talent in Manny Aparicio over in Ottawa, with both having left Pacific following the 2023 CPL season.

The Zenica-born defender isn’t just a leader at the back, having also proven to be a big threat up top on set pieces. He scored eight goals for the Tridents, four of which came last year.

Prior to Pacific, Didic was a stalwart servant for hometown club FC Edmonton through the first three Canadian Premier League seasons. He made 48 appearances as a regular starter under both Jeff Paulus and Alan Koch, growing to cement himself as a no-nonsense defender with a commanding presence on the pitch.

The twice-capped Canadian international had also played for both Swope Park Rangers and San Antonio FC before coming home during the launch of the Canadian Premier League.

It’s been a truly tremendous offseason for Atletico Ottawa fans so far, with the club securing a number of sizable additions in the likes of Matteo de Brienne, Kris Twardek, Aboubacar Sissoko, Ballou Tabla, and the aforementioned Manny Aparicio, to name a few.

As is league standard, Atletico Ottawa are not expected to reveal the financial terms of Amer Didic’s contract – but many will think the late acquisitions of he and Aparicio will prove priceless. The game-changing defender wasn’t the only roster news to come from the club today, with Atletico Ottawa original Malcolm Shaw departing.

More details on Amer’s signing is expected to be released by the club tomorrow.
