Cavalry Confirms Exit Of Shome, Gutierrez
It’s the end of a midfield era for Canadian Premier League powerhouse Cavalry FC, who today confirmed the departures of both Bangladeshi international Shamit Shomi and veteran midfielder Diego Gutierrez.
The Alberta-based side has seeing plenty of roster movement after finishing runners-up in the CPL playoffs in 2025. Both Shome and Gutierrez featured in the final.

Former CF Montreal man Shamit Shome spent the last three seasons with Cavalry FC, racking up nearly eighty appearances throughout all competitions. The 28-year-old had once suited up for now-defunct rivals FC Edmonton, but found more success on the Calgary side of things – with Cavalry, he hoisted the CPL Shield in 2023 and a North Star Cup in 2024.
2025 saw him commit to the Bangladesh national team, with Shome earning five caps and building a fervent following from national team supporters. It’s unclear where the midfielder, who once won a Voyageurs Cup in his Montreal days and has a universityy engineering degree, is heading next.

The club had previously declined to trigger its option for Diego Gutierrez, instead entering negotiations at the turn of the new year. Without finding agreement on either side, however, the former Valour FC captain now formally exits having made 49 appearances over the last two seasons.
His time in Winnipeg saw him rack up four goals and three assists in 82 appearances, with a shorter stint at AC Barnechea separating chapters with his old club. Like Shome, it’s unclear where the 28-year-old is now headed.
The club had previously confirmed the release of Vancouver FC-bound left-back Tom Field along with Dutch forward Ayman Sellouf, while club captain Marco Carducci has made the move east to the Halifax Wanderers, with Nathan Ingham clocking in as the captain’s replacement between the sticks.
Cavalry boss Tommy Wheeldon Jr. has also said that it’s unlikely forward Ali Musse will return, so the 2026 Cavalry FC roster is expected to have several new faces amongst the bunch.
