Toronto FC and head coach John Herdman have continued to impress after beating Charlotte FC 1-0 in front of a home crowd.

Even in damp weather, the support was still present for the Reds as they came out with a win to mark their 2024 MLS home opener.

Coach Herdman began the line-up with change in goal as goalkeeper Luka Gavran made his debut for TFC. Gavran put up a incredible performance in his first game as a Red, as he continued on the clean streaks set by Sean Johnson in past matchups.

The keeper’s performance was highlighted by a showstopping save in the last few minutes of the first half, where he denied Charlotte from getting first blood.

Former Newcastle midfielder Matty Longstaff also made his debut as he was subbed into the game in the second half.

Lorenzo Insigne would also earn his second man of the match honours this season for his stunning goal in the final ten minutes of playing time.

Insigne’s class of a goal marks his second this MLS campaign and his second game winning goal, after winning it for TFC in last week’s matchup in New England.

Coach Herdman has now broken the streak of losses at home with this win against Charlotte. Under Herdman’s charge Toronto FC have a 2-1-0 record, sit second currently in the east, and have locked in 7 out of 9 points and has gotten impressive performances from Italian DP Lorenzo Insigne and other offseason signings like Deybi Flores and Nicksoen Gomis.

At the present, momentum is definitely there for Coach Herdman and his team.

“This is our team, we keep going, we don’t stop now,” said Captain Jonathan Osorio after the final whistle was blown in a huddle with his teammates.

Toronto FC will be hoping it’s streak of clean sheets and positive momentum will be carried into their next matchup against New York City FC, with the Reds playing away at Yankee Stadium next Saturday as they continue to rebuild from 2023.
