In the Halifax Wanderers’ second roster announcement of the day, the east coast side has confirmed the acquisition of 31-year-old striker Christian Volesky, who arrives on a one-year deal with a club option for 2025.

A USL Championship mainstay, the striker has tallied an incredible 67 goals and 23 assists through a career that has seen him play in Tucson, Rochester, Saint Louis, Oklahoma City, Pittsburgh, Colorado Springs, and most recently Monterey Bay, where he played alongside former Wanderer Morey Doner.

“Christian is a player that scores in lots of different ways and brings a lot of leadership into our team. He brings a lot of confidence and goalscoring ability from his position,” says Wanderers head coach Patrice Gheisar. “That was something we were looking to add to our squad for this season, plus I think he and Tiago Coimbra will complement each other well.”

Hailing from Henderson, Nevada, his last two seasons with USL Championship expansion side Monterey Bay FC have seen him tally an incredible 18 goals and 10 assists, suggesting the the American striker can quickly get to work on Canada’s east coast.

He’s expected to provide a veteran presence on a front line that leans younger, with Tiago Coimbra and Massimo Ferrin clocking in at 20 and 25 years of age respectively, though they combined for 12 goals after joining the club last season.

“I’ve done a lot of homework on the club and the fanbase, and I’m really excited to be in a group that found success last season and can try and lift the trophy this season for the fans that I know are the best in Canada,” Volesky added.

“I’ve had the chance to play against Canadian clubs in the past and have some family in Saskatchewan, so I’m excited to come over the border and play again.”

Voleskey brings a winning mentality with him: a Portland Timbers SuperDraft pick, his USL Championship venturing has seen him lead multiple club’s goalscoring charts and hoist a USL Championship trophy with Rochester back in 2015.

He’s also a tested tried-and-true penalty kick taker who could replace Morelli’s role for the club in those particular situations.

“My job is to finish the chances, but I know there’s plenty of other guys in this team that can score as well,” added the striker. “We can share the load a bit and score a bunch of goals to get the fans excited.”
